While endearingly janky devices like the Nokla E97 aren’t usually to be found on Western shelves, that could change thanks to a key High Court ruling in the UK. The case had been brought by Nokia, who alleged that Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC) in the UK had acted unfairly when allowing a shipment of counterfeit goods bearing Nokia’s trademarks free passage through the country after discovering they were not intended for sale there.In fact, HMRC decided that, since a UK trademark would require an intention of trading, items not headed for UK shelves could not be seized. The shipment was allowed to continue on its way to Columbia, and Nokia brought the case before the High Court arguing that HMRC had interpreted the Counterfeit Goods Regulations in an “unduly restrictive” manner.
The courts decision in favor of HMRC was tempered by the judge’s admission that the situation took advantage of a legal loophole, and that he hoped it would be closed as soon as possible.

Not long at all after that mysterious Nokia RX-51 passed through the FCC comes shots from Indonesian message board Kaskus of the tablet-like device in the wild. The blurred box shot and the label behind the battery clearly say RX-51 prototype, and the design is unmistakably similar to the rumored press photo for the Maemo 5-powered Rover from back in May. We can't help but notice the 5 megapixel Carl Zeiss lens and, more importantly, SIM card slot and an ear piece, which would be perfect for placing calls on, say, T-Mobile's network. If you're looking for the cheapest possible way to get in on this S60 5th Edition craze that's sweeping the globe, you've probably got a keen eye on Nokia's 5530 a phone that strangely looks much nicer than its pricier, more full-featured 5800 big brother and if you're in the UK, you won't be waiting much longer. Mobile Today is reporting that Carphone Warhouse has nabbed itself a nice little six-week British exclusive on the phone starting August 11, running a totally palatable £130 (about $218) on a pay-as-you-go deal. We'd have a hard time adapting to EDGE, but who knows - if you've got enough open WiFi networks in your daily route, maybe it's doable.Tuesday, June 02, 2009
Nokia have announced that their N97 flagship smartphone will go on sale worldwide this month. No word on pricing for any of the 75 countries that will soon be getting the 3.5-inch touchscreen handset, nor specific availability dates, but the UK will apparently get it on unlocked and SIM-free from Nokia themselves as of June 19th.
SIM-free, the N97 is priced at around £500; that will be followed by a June 26th launch on the various carriers in the UK, with no word on pricing but a clear possibility of picking up the N97 free with a sufficiently expensive tariff. The N97 is already available to preorder in the US, priced at around $455 after discounts.
Your money gets you a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, S60 5th Edition OS, WiFi, GPS, HSPA and of course that 3.5-inch resistive touchscreen. However we’re also wary of the potentially low-powered CPU Nokia have fitted the N97 with; we’ll have to wait for the final model to see if that undermines the smartphone.

The specs of the upcoming Nokia N900 internet tablet have been unveiled. Measuring 59.7mm x 111mm x 18.2mm and weighing at 180grams, the successor to the current N810 will be featured by a 3.5-inch 800×480 (WVGA) touchscreen, OMAP3430 500/600 Mhz processor, a 1GB total virtual runtime memory, a 32GB internal storage (expandable up to 48GB via external memory), a 5.0MP Carl Zeiss camera with dual-LED flash, auto-focus and sliding cover. As expected, Nokia has gone by its word and launched the Ovi Store. Though it’s accessible only from countries like Australia, Ireland and Singapore, more countries are expected to join the list soon. Nokia also confirmed about moving the Ovi Store to ‘production servers’ which means a global access will be possible by the end of this week.
After being available in the other market for quite some time, Nokia has announced to sell the 6208 Classic in the Indian region. 6208 Classic is Nokia’s first touchscreen attempt on Series 40 platform and features a 3.2MP sensor with dual LED flash, 2.4-inch QVGA touchscreen display, handwriting recognition, music player, FM Radio and microSD card slot expandable up to 8GB.The phone is priced at Rs. 13,259 which makes me think why would one go for this one when they can get a better phone in the form of LG Cookie or Samsung Star?

Nokia has confirmed that the N97 NAM will be released in North America on June 2nd, 2009. You can expect many of the U.S. retailers to sell the Nokia N97 NAM for around $600 even if the suggested price is $699. FYI, the cell phone features a 5MP camera, a touchscreen display, a QWERTY keyboard, a GPS, and a long battery life.Friday, May 22, 2009
Nokia has announced 6600i Slide that will take over the reigns from the original 6600 Slide. The phone ups from 6600 Slide in many departments like the brushed steel cover, chrome center key and a 5 megapixel camera with dual LED flash. 6600i Slide also integrates an accelerometer which helps to the screen take tap commands for rejecting or silencing the call or to snooze the alarm. Other things include 3G support, 2.2-inch display, microSD card slot which can expanded up to 16GB.The phone will make its way to the retail market in the third quarter this year at a 200 Euros ($273) price tag.

Nokia introduces internet ready 2730 Classic, 2720 Fold and 7020

Nokia has announced three budget phones that boasts internet connectivity at a very affordable price. The 2730 Classic is Nokia’s cheapest 3G phone and brings in a decent amount of features for its 80 Euros ($108) price tag. The phone features a 2-inch QVGA screen, 2MP camera, Bluetooth, FM Radio, Nokia Life Tools, Ovi Mail and a talk time of 3.3 hours and 17 days of standby time.
Next up is 6600 Fold’s lookalike, the 2720 Fold. Running on Series 40 software, the phone touts a simple 3 step process for emails via Ovi Mail and comes with Nokia Life Tools, Bluetooth, FM Radio, FM recording, MMS and a talk time of around 5 hours and standby time of up to 18 days. The phone will hit the retail shelves in third quarter for a cheap 55 Euros ($74).
Lastly, the 7020 clamshell is targeted towards fashionistas with its design, color and metal finishes. The phone has a 2.2-inch display, 2MP camera, FM Radio, MP3 Player and microSD card slot supporting up to 16GB. On the software front, the phone is loaded with Nokia Life Tools, Ovi Share, Ovi Store, Nokia Messaging, Opera Mini browser, Nokia Maps and pre-bookmarked addresses of social networking sites. It has a 4.5 hours of talk time, 15 days of standby time and will arrive in the last quarter of this year for 90 Euros ($122).
Remember the Nokia 5800XM getting capacitive touchscreen rumor which eventually got debunked? Apparently, Nokia spoke the truth because a new report surfaced today claims that a Taiwanese company has been given the mantle to provide them with capacitive touch panels for ‘another’ Nokia phone. Wintek, the current provider for 5800XM resistive touch panels will supply them with capacitive ones.There are no details available regarding the phone but if we were to make a guess, it could be something to beat Samsung’s i8910 HD since it enables the user to use the same OS on a capacitive screen. We are not sure about the HD part though.

Mobile-review’s Eldar Murtazin has leaked some info of what seems to be another win for Nokia in the smartphone category. E71, which is already doing well in the market, will supposedly have an upgrade soon. The upgrade known as E71i will feature an upped camera sensor to 5 megapixel and Series 60 OS with FP2. Nokia has added another phone to its portfolio to woo the business users. E52 is strikingly similar to E55 but ditches the compact QWERTY keyboard for an alphanumeric one. Battery is the USP over here which promises to give an 8 hour of talk time and 23 days of standby time. It runs on S60 3rd Ed FP2 and features a 2.4-inch display, 3.2 megapixel camera, 10.2Mbps HSDPA, A-GPS, noise cancellation, integrated VPN, storage expansion slot via microSD and support for Nokia Messaging.The phone will be bundled with a 1GB microSD card and 60 days trial of Ovi File. Expected to ship after June at an estimated retail price of 245 Euros ($326).

Thank FCC because without them we wouldn’t know what handset manufacturers have in store for us. Nokia’s 6750 codenamed Mural has been leaked by them which is expected to arrive on AT&T soon. There is not much to tell right now but analyzing the picture, the glossy clamshell looks to be pocket friendly phone and features a camera, dedicated music keys and possibly an expansion slot. Nokia adds another Near Field Communication (NFC) device to its line up. NFC is a short-distance communication protocol (<1 feet) that can be used for contactless payments, among other things. The Nokia 6216 Classic stores your payment knowledge (credit card…) in the SIM card, which already has some robust shield features. The 6216 classic is an “average” phone that’s meant for a mass-market. t looks like a slider, and it looks like a touch-screen. Unfortunately, the Nokia 6303 is neither - it’s just another budget handset based on the design of the older Nokia 6300. I have to admit, though, it feels like somewhere along the way this phone evolved into some kind of alien device. It’s just too round for me.
Well, let’s start with the major points: 7 hours of battery life, stainless steel design, 3.2 megapixel camera, 2.2″ true color screen, 3.5mm audio jack. Not bad for an S40.
The camera has a dual LED flash, and allows MPEG-4 VGA video recording @ 15 frames per second.
The XpressMusic line has been so vastly improved that it isn’t even funny. Two years ago, XpressMusic phones (known here as XpressPlastic) were akin to Fisher-Price toys for tots - now, the line has expanded to include Nokia’s first touch-screen phone (5800 XpressMusic) and a bunch of actually decent midrange models. What the heck happened?
Unfortunately, I can’t answer that question, but I can shed some light on the newest XpressMusic, the 5630. The 5630 is a quad-band + 3G (WCDMA 2100/900) candy bar that’s super thin @ 12mm, and runs the Symbian OS. That in itself is a huge bonus, as most of the phones in this price range are S40 “dumbphones”. I’ve lost track of which S60 version we’re up to, but there’s definitely some noticeable differences in the interface - one being the addition of a scrollable quick contacts bar, which stores 20 people (names and images). Looks cool.
